I love the Lumberjanes.
I love every page and every character. The writers and artists in this series are brilliant. I was already sold on the solicit for this all-ages book when my Local Comic Store employee said, “I was a Boy Scout Camp counselor, and it’s just like that, except for the mystical creatures.” I attended camp as a tween, and my experience was nothing like this!
I love that all of their “curse” words are things like “What the junk?” or “What in the name of Mae Jemison is going on here?” By the time someone said “What the Joan Jett???” I was ready to change how I express myself forever. Yes, it’s about scouts, earning badges, being girls, being strong, friendship, a mystical bear-woman, and finding ways to get out of the trouble you just put yourself into. Sometimes ludicrous, but in such a wonderful way.
The hard cover edition is set up like a Lumberjanes Field Manual, with each story headed by “how to earn” a specific badge. Many yummy goodies follow, including snippets of scripts and early sketches, the original pitch, and music playlists. It’s delightful. It feels disingenious to pick out one creator over another for special recognition. They do great things together, just like the Lumberjanes themselves.
