This 190-page graphic novel by autistic creator Tess Langston is part educational comic and part memoir. Tess was diagnosed autistic and nonspeaking at a young age and grew up learning to navigate the strange, neurotypical world we live in. Now, as an adult with a love for sequential storytelling, she has created Growing Up on the Spectrum to share all that she’s learned.
The book explores how autistic brains function, how masking works, special interests, sensory input, nonverbal communication, overwhelm, burnout, and so much more—all with whimsy, humor, and respect for readers.
It also includes external resource guides, a handy glossary, and even interactive portions to help readers explore their own experience, including relationship charts, shame-busting worksheets, brain archetype visual aids, and more.
“Growing Up on the Spectrum is a collection of my firsthand experiences, learning to navigate a world that wasn’t built with me in mind,” says creator Tess Langston. “I created this book to help bridge the gap between the autism community and the rest of the world. Join us in bringing it to life and building better understanding together!”
