Titans #1

TITANS #1 (DC / Winick / Churchill / Rapmund)

A new team of Titans is born in the extra-sized first issue of a new ongoing monthly by Judd Winick (GREEN LANTERN, GREEN ARROW, OUTSIDERS), Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund (SUPERGIRL, TEEN TITANS EAST SPECIAL)! Someone or something is continuing its attack on anyone who’s ever been a Titan, including Nightwing, Starfire, Donna Troy, Beast Boy and Raven.

You won’t want to miss this new startling chapter in Titans history that may forge a new team from the ashes of old, dead friends. “

Bold new direction for one of DC’s greatest teams, or re-tread of overdone stories? This is the great debate that is happening in the overstuffed shelves of ThePullBox sanctum. I read this issue and was blown away. I was trapped by the Titans East one shot (read my review here) and, although not happy with the wait time, am very excited about this new Titans book. and the direction Winick is taking the first arc. The art was absolutely captivating. The scene of Nightwing diving from an exploding building as shards of glass protrude from his back was stressful and seemed realistic. And it just wouldn’t be Titans book if Starfire wasn’t naked (thanks for that too). I loved every page and word I read…Bring on the multi-eyed bad guy!

My friend and fellow reviewer, Eric, fells a bit differently about the matter. While he also appreciates a sun-bathing Starfire, he feels that the overall story is nothing more than a rehash of the Marv Wolfman & George Perez run on the Titans back in the 80’s. He’s got a bit of the, “been there, done that” attitude towards the book. I’m not saying he’s wrong, but I think this may be the same discussions that are going to happen in comic shops around the country.

I’m sure this discussion will persist as more issues come out. I’ll keep you readers posted.

  1. oooooh, the Titans are reforming… and Trigon is the revealed bad guy because Raven is loosing her cool when dealing with her “destiny”… nope, never saw that coming! How far away is Brother Blood or Starfire’s family or an introduction of new team members that the Titans create an increidble emotional bonds with and then find out she a puppet of Slade’s? Great talent! Great art!… but could we use a new map?
