Young X-Men #1

Young X-Men #1 (Marvel – Guggenheim / Paquette / Lapoint / Peru)

In the wake of Messiah CompleX, there are no X-Men and young mutants Rockslide, Blindfold and Dust are alone and directionless. Until the day Cyclops recruits them to hunt the new incarnation of the Brotherhood – and kill them. Joined by a pair of new recruits, the young X-Men learn a hard truth about the world post-Messiah CompleX: sometimes old allies make for deadly enemies.

You know what was kind of cool, picking up an X-book and having it make sense from the very beginning even without having an extensive mutant character trivia knowledge base, or having to do “catch-up” research in wikipedia. Young X-men shows that Marvel can write a good solid mutant story, within the existing X-universe continuum, and both please the fans who have come before and not exile the folks who are picking it up for the first time because and might not know what has come before.

Fun characters, good writing, enjoyable art… this could be a breakaway series.
