Super Villain Team-Up / M.O.D.O.K.’s 11 #4

Super Villain Team-Up / M.O.D.O.K.’s 11 #4 (Marvel – Van Lente / Portela / Pallot) – Going into this series, I didn’t really expect much. To be honest, I didn’t read the previous issues until I sat down to review #4. Reading the run of issues 1 through 4 was vastly engaging… good writing and great pace. The backdrop is, is that M.O.D.O.K. is his highly evolved intelligence has figured out that the world would make more sense without humans and he is the one to take out all human life. To help him complete his quest, he finds an object that he must acquire… a boxed supernova repeatedly inverting on itself inside a fortress that rests on the edge of time (nope… not making it up). To get his item, he puts together a ragtag crew of C and D list villains and creates his own “perfect” job crew. The problems pop up when every villain is truly out for themselves and even M.O.D.O.K. has plan to back stab and kill his crew after he has his supernova. Fred Van Lente really impresses me with his use subplot to move a pretty complex story along… it’s like a good episode of Heroes or Lost. The only real problem with the book, is
the amount of characters present and the facts that almost every character is at best a supporting villain… this series is a who’s who of wannabes… which is fantastic for storytelling, not so good if you aren’t a hardcore fanboy jumping and not recognizing anyone. Still overall, a very fun read.
