Marvel doubles down on Robert E. Howard

Marvel is upping their game as it relates to the characters and property of Robert E. Howard… Check out the Marvel blurbs below…

Robert E. Howard’s swashbuckling heroine, Dark Agnes, will helm her very first comic series! Dark Agnes will be making her Marvel Comics debut this December in CONAN: SERPENT WAR, introducing this beloved swordswoman to a new generation of readers, before taking off on her own adventures in February’s DARK AGNES #1.

The five-issue limited series will depict the journey of Agnes de Chastillon as she frees herself from an arranged marriage to live the dangerous life of a sellsword in 16th-century France. Joined by Etienne Villers, the mercenary pair’s daring exploits will be penned by writer Becky Cloonan(THE PUNISHER) with art by Luca Pizzari(WEAPON X, BLACK KNIGHT).

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me you’d never heard of Dark Agnes. Well, that’s about to change,” says Cloonan. “Agnes is the unsung anti-hero of Robert E. Howard’s legendary body of work. She’s a swashbuckling, musket wielding, doublet wearing bad ass swordswoman from the early Renaissance. A fierce warrior, a stalwart friend, and a brutal, unrelenting force in a bloody, chaotic world. Agnes is just as relevant today as she was when Howard dreamed her up, and as she is in her own time: the filthy 1500’s. Join us for a tale of mystery, adventure, and revenge!”

“Considering Howard is mostly known for his male protagonists, it’s perhaps surprising to new readers of his works that the original Sword Woman story was written back in the 1930’s as a woman in first person,” says Joakim Zetterberg, Executive Vice President at Conan Properties. “It shows that Howard’s heroines equal his heroes in being whirlwind adventurers. We’re certain Becky, Luca and the Marvel team will make this series truly kick ass, befitting Agnes herself.”

Since early this year, fans have been delighted to see characters from the legendary mind of Robert E. Howard return to the Marvel Universe with titles like CONAN THE BARBARIAN, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN, and AGE OF CONAN: BÊLIT and VALERIA, and now, Marvel Comics is honored to welcome the classic character of Dark Agnes to this amazing lineup. Follow Dark Agnes on her epic quest this February!

Conan will be starring in a new series that will take the barbarian to places he’s never gone before! Conan made his grand return to the Marvel Comics earlier this year and now, CONAN: BATTLE FOR THE SERPENT CROWN will have the legendary Robert E. Howard character diving deeper into the Marvel Universe meeting a wide variety of Marvel heroes and daring to go up against Marvel’s most iconic villains, including the devilish Mephisto! A far cry from the Hyborian Age, Conan will take his relentless strength and savage sword to Las Vegas on an epic quest to find the Serpent Crown of Atlantis. Guiding him on his journey to Sin City and beyond will be writer Saladin Ahmed(BLACK BOLT, MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN) and artist Luke Ross(STAR WARS: ALLEGIANCE, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN).

“Getting to write Conan the Barbarian taking on the Marvel Universe is a high-octane, widescreen dream gig for me,” says Ahmed. “The 616 is a world full of unimaginably powerful treasures and absurdly wealthy kings — the perfect place for Conan to ply his trade as a warrior-thief. From Las Vegas to Atlantis, Conan will carve a path of plunder — and face some of the mightiest heroes and villains in the Marvel universe!”

“Since being transported into the Marvel Universe in AVENGERS: NO ROAD HOME and SAVAGE AVENGERS, Conan’s been drawn into his own adventures as he explores this strange new world, and now we’re going to get a look at one particular quest,” says Editor Mark Basso. “Far from home, but far from helpless, this is Conan as you’ve never quite seen him before.”

Conan’s foray into the Marvel Universe continues this February in CONAN: BATTLE FOR THE SERPENT CROWN!
