“She Makes Comics” was one of the best documentaries every made about the comic industry – Check out the next incredible project from Respect Films – Cosplanet: The Evolution of Cosplay – this looks like an incredible project.
“Respect Films has been producing documentaries about the world of comics for the past five years. Our projects include Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods, Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts, The Image Revolution and most recently She Makes Comics.
While filming She Makes Comics, we spoke to a wide variety of people about their experiences with cosplay, both in the present day and when it was known as “costuming” back in the 70s. We touched on the subject in She Makes Comics, but didn’t have time to delve into all the fascinating stories we had encountered.
After the release of the film, we heard from many people how vindicated they were to see cosplay included in the history of women in comics. Recently, some comics pros have attacked cosplay and cosplayers’ increasing presence at cons, declaring that these “interlopers” are taking over cons. Having done the research and spoken to the people who were there, it was clear how absurd this sentiment was. Cosplay has been a part of cons since the beginning, and cosplayers have not only been huge fans, many prominent writers, artists and editors got their start in the world of cosplay!
So, we decided to create a film that would tell the story of cosplay. We want to show the evolution of the form over the years, and also capture the wide breadth of cosplay happening today, from casual enthusiasts to high end professionals, we want to show the whole world of cosplay. ”
