Poe #1 – repost!

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege to read and review Poe from Boom!  It is out this week and I am re-posting my review in hope that you indie fans out there will know what is good for you and give a real detective comic a spin!

Poe (Boom! – Mitchell / Kotz)

Everyone knows that Poe created the detective genre, but did you know he was a detective himself? Finally the secret can be revealed for the first time! Enter the world of POE and follow the famous author of darkness as he tracks the killer of his brother’s friend. Supernatural adventure for fans of books like HELLBOY! “Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.” –Edgar Allan Poe

This break-out book is part gothic-horror, part action-adventure and part supernatural-mystery. I know, I know… it sounds like there is too much going on, but one of the strong points of this book is that it is a wonderful working mesh of these different genres.

We open up with Edgar “resting” at a sanitarium after the death of his wife. And as it turns out, he is getting very little rest because in a very Sixth Sense way, Edgar has developed an ability to to talk to wayward ghosts. He keeps wandering off and escaping because apparently hanging out with those spirits at the sanitarium is not so much fun.

Thankfully, with no small glee from the hospital staff, Edgar’s older brother (William) comes to the rescue and gets him out of there. Now, William also happens to be a Constable and this sets up the series. Gee, two brothers – one a well-to-do straight cop and one a medium-ish author and father of the detective genre… this makes for the perfect “buddy” story.

The author, J. Barton Mitchell does an extraordinary job of being able to transition from Edgar’s horrific experiences to the the brothers hunting down clues to a straight-out supernatural action tale. Poe proves very, very promising! Watch for Poe coming in July.
