Teen Titans #56

Teen Titans #56 (DC / McKeever / Barrows / Palmiotti)

“The new and deadly Bolt descends upon Titans Tower! When your soul is due to become forfeit in just a few short years, what do you do? If you’re Kid Devil, you throw a super hero party! One Teen Titan will fight to stop it, and another consider a life of crime because of it!

DC’s write up on this issue is a bit misleading. Kid Devil doesn’t throw a party because his candle is burning out. He throws a party because is feels like an outcast and is going through typical teen depression. A depression that’s punctuated by the fact that he’s going to become a demon’s pawn in three years and none of his teammates are connecting with him. So here he is, living in a really cool place and he is all alone, why not invite a few people over? This issue also kicks off the new story arc where the “Terror Titans”, lead by Clock King, are planning on taking the Teen Titans out one-by-one.

Writing and art are always top notch in this book (save for that two issue run from Rob Liefeld) and this issue is a big character piece. There is some action, but the bigger focus is on the emotional state of Kid Devil. I found my heart going out more than once to Eddie “Kid Devil” Bloomberg since he’s been a Titan. And since we’ve gotten a peek at what his future holds, I’m interested to see where this character is headed.
