HERO BY NIGHT (Platinum – Coffman / Embury) – Here is the 2006 Comic Book Challenge winner Hero By Night. The 4-part mini-series is created, written, illustrated, and lettered by D.J Coffman with colors done by Jason Embury. Ho-boy, did this book hit it out of the park! Sure, these for issues are just the origin story of the current Hero By Night, but it’s rich with a pulpy nostalgia feel. Coffman made me care for Jack, our protagonist, and all the supporting characters. I’m not going to get into the overall story because I want you to go out and buy the books, read them, then send an e-mail to the creators to tell them how cool they are. I’m glad I read issues 1-4 all in one sitting, because I could not put the book down. Some people might read this as only see a simplistic hero story. Well I’m here to tell you that there is art in Coffman’s simplicity. I give this book my highest recommendation!
