Ultimate Fantastic Four #52 (Marvel – Land / Carey / Kirkham)
The Thanos saga continues! Last issue saw Mr. Fantastic square off one-on-one with Thanos for the Cosmic Cube – so who now holds the deadly weapon? Why have the Human Torch and Invisible Girl undergone a horrifying transformation? And will the Thing survive his encounter with the never-before-seen third child of Thanos?
I don’t know if it was my happy-pills this week or if the last week of comics every month is really that good. What I do know that is six short months this book has gone from my “almost dropped” list to one of the first that I read when it comes out.
The first run with Ultimate Thanos was over-played and crowded with about a dozen extraneous secondary random characters which did nothing but drag down the plot. This time around… none of the randomness and I applaud Mike Carey for that! Thanos has the Cosmic Cube, Johnny and Sue have been converted into his army, Ben is hanging with Big T’s Daughter… and Reed is not quite as dead as we thought he was. Fantastic stuff, this run will be a trade to get!
