Pullbox Reviews: Young Hellboy Goes on a Pulp Adventure in The Hidden Land!

Thomas Sniegoski and Mike Mignola are clearly having a blast with this one, and their joy is our gain. Young Hellboy is a rip-roaring fun time, hitting all the right notes of a world-hopping pulp adventure. The voice of child Hellboy is extremely well executed(as you’d of course expect, given this writing tandem): you’ve got elements and hints at the mannerisms of the adult HB-to-come, bits of his humor, but via the lens of a young child, fascinated with everything and happy to fly off on an adventure with his adored (but frequently absent) father-figure. Pullbox Review: Mignola, Allie and Stenbeck Continue the Creature’s Tale in Frankenstein Undone #2

Here, we see growth in Frankenstein—of both his philosophy, and his prejudices. And his determination to find a similar, if not like, enlightened mind. The evolution of the creature’s thoughts and beliefs are as powerful as they are at times heart-wrenching—again, in solid tune with the source material. Mignola has written so well for so long (as has Allie), that it’s easy to take his tale-weaving for granted. Make sure not to—take the time to absorb the story the authors tell and not just tear through it like any other comic: this is literature, not pulp. Trust me—you’ll be glad you did.

Pullbox Reviews: Frankenstein Undone Fills the Gaps in the Creature’s Tale

Written by the powerhouse team of Mike Mignola and Scott Allie and drawn by long-time Mignola collaborator Ben Stenbeck, this five-issue arc picks up at the end of Mary Shelley’s novella and fills the gap to the creature’s (named Frankenstein, after his father, in the way of his people, in this issue) appearance in 2015’s Frankenstein Underground.
