Nicnevin and the Bloody Queen Haunt the Way to Spring!

Nicnevin is the kind of dark and spooky British tale that appeals to the mid-teen to adult crowd and seems like a nice, fun confection—right up until it rips out your guts and leaves you with nightmares for weeks on end. Anyone whose read Neil Gaiman’s novels can appreciate the style, and as a freshman effort from Helen Mullane, it’s an impressive work. I found the tale engaging, the lore fascinating, the characters engaging. (12/13)

The Fuhrer and The Tramp (Finally) Make it to Print!

So, what do you get when you throw a genocidal dictator, a leggy genius femme fatale, a dashing action hero lothario and the greatest slapstick performer of the 20th (or any other) century together in an alterna-historical plot to end the Nazi threat forever? And then pepper in some seasoning of a young and completely badass (you were right, Paul) future Dracular/Saruman, a polio-affected president, a—sorry—the sultry jazz-blues singer and a future time-traveling doctor? You get a helluva good time, is what you get. (13/13)
