The Pullbox Gift Guide: Andy’s Take

With the gift-giving season approaching, the writing team here at the Pullbox is throwing out their suggestions for all the geeks in your life… first up, Andy

A quick caveat before I get going: I’m old. Like, middle-aged, having as much fun looking back on the things I enjoyed in my youth as I do anticipating new things kinda old…and my gift choices sort of reflect that. Hopefully, you’re buying for an older geek…

A gift for a geek: movie edition

Buffy: The Complete Series – Cheating a little and going with a tv show…but to be fair, it’s the mother of all geekdom tv shows. Not cheap, but if your loved one values their geek cred, they have to own this.

A gift for a geek: comic edition

Skullkickers Treasure Trove – Swords, sorcery and buffoonery at their highest level. If you don’t enjoy the Skullkickers, then I don’t even want to know you.

A gift for a geek: gaming edition

Lords of Waterdeep – Here, I’m interpreting “gaming” to mean board gaming. This is a fairly quickly-paced, deeply strategic game that truly provides a new experience each time you play it, within the ambiance of the classic D&D setting. Really a can’t-miss.

A gift for a geek: tech edition

Victrola Vintage 3-Speed Bluetooth Portable Suitcase Record Player – Debatable whether you can truly qualify this as “tech,”(I mean, it is bluetooth compatible) but I got myself one for Christmas last year (this exact model, in fact), and there’s something just viscerally satisfying about listening to vinyl on an old-fashioned suitcase record player. And if you really need to–it is bluetooth, so you can sync up your new-fangled speaker or headphones to it if you really want pristine sound…

A gift for a geek: toy edition

Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms Drizzt & Guenhwyvar (Hasbro Pulse) – As an RPG gamer child of the 80’s, this was a complete no-brainer. R.A. Salvatore’s Drizzt is a character who continues to impact my tabletop gaming even now, several decades later. It’s about time he and Guen got their action figure due.
