Fantastic Four #568 (Marvel – Millar / Ahearne / Hitch / Edwards)
The penultimate chapter of THE MASTER OF DOOM, as Reed Richards is offered a Solomon’s choice by the triumphant Marquis of Death!
This issue starts off pretty odd with Ben going to his fiance’s house to apologize for getting angry and ends up destroying her neighborhood in a fit of rage when some of the local start yelling at him. In my opinion, a very un-Ben-like moment.
The story then picks up some as the Marquis of Death and his apprentice attack the FF, showing off Victor’s failure by taking out Doom’s biggest foes. He isolates Reed after he neutralizes Ben, Johnny and Sue. Using his reality bending powers, he gives Reed several choices to undo history to save the population of the Earth… and in the process clues the reader into his own origins.
From here it gets really weird as the issue ends with a plethora of Fantastic Fours all attacking Reed? It’s pretty sketchy at best. Bad transitions and huge holes make for a troubled plot that is not such a great penultimate issue for writer Mark Millar. The art still stands strong, kudos to Bryan Hitch and Neil Edwards.
