Buckaroo Banzai – Big Size, Big Price, Small Story

Buckaroo Banzai – Big Size (Moonstone – Rauch / Richter / Hanley)

In a race to save the famed wild asses of the remote Kush mountain range, Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers uncover a large-scale World Crime League operation led by a shadowy figure from the Cavaliers’ past. Asses wiped out for their aphrodisiac properties? Who is the mysterious Blind Sheik? Perfect Tommy in an all out revenge duel to the death…with knives or guitar solos? A Hong Kong Cavalier breathes his last while another has turned to the dark side?

Moonstone puts out a new Banzai book about once or twice a year, so when it hits, I am pumped. I think Buckaroo Banzai is one of the most entertaining and promising properties out there.

So, I get really disappointed when I finally get to read a new story and it falls under the category of “not worth my time, money or effort”.

The Story had Bucakroo and the Hong Kong Cavaliers go undercover to infiltrate a donkey poacher ring. Yes, I said donkey poacher ring. The World Crime League has struck… and they’re killing wild donkeys… wow.  And yes, it’s that obvious from frame #2 that the Blind Sheik is really Buckaroo. I simply cannot believe this was really written by “the” Mac Rauch, creator and writing force behind the film.

It seems like this story came from someone who wanted to write a BB story just to mock the eccentric creativity and genius that usually accompanies a BB plot. The only thing redeeming about this issue is the art. Paul Haney gives style where there is no content. $4.75… $4.75? It may be a 40 pages story, but I would rather have had 20 pages of quality.
