Booster Gold #17 (DC – Jurgens / Rapmund)
Featuring an “Origins and Omens” backup story! Part 3 of the 4-part “Reality Lost” arc finds Booster Gold transported back to a seminal day in the history of The Flash! Here’s a hint: it has to do with a bolt of lightning and a chemical bath!
You know what’s killing me here? It’s the fact that I think if you lined up the most influential creators of mainstream comics over the last few decades, Dan Jurgens would be right up in the lead group. Let me repeat this, Dan Jurgens is a great writer. It just so happens right now, he’s writing left-overs and re-runs from “Quantum Leap” with just a dash of “Voyagers!” (yes, old schoolers, give a yell-out!).
Here’s your basic story arc plot summary “Booster needs to fix the time line by doing *BLANK*, but he stands the risk of ruining it further if he interacts with *BLANK*, oh no, he did… and now Rip, Goldstar, an alternate version of himself or *BLANK* saves him, sets everything right and we move onto the next arc”.
I feel bad picking on the book, because it has potential. But the whole “History’s greatest hero you never knew” is just running thin. In this issue, Barry Allen almost doesn’t become the flash because Booster is in the wrong place, but then Booster fixes it.. Yea?… more like Meh! Perhaps keep him in the present, with the whole post Final Crisis, and let him help the JLA, JSA… hell, even the Outsiders. But please break this story monotony!
This issue had the “Origins and Omens” banner, which is a tie-in for the Blackest Night event that is on the horizon. We have Scar, the Dark Guardian pondering over Earth’s heroes… she gives Booster’s origin and then basically says he will not play into the Blackest Night event at all. Hmmmm… waste of space.
