Project: Superpowers #0

Project: Superpowers #0 (Dynamite – Ross / Krueger / Sadowski / Klauba) From the dawn of the 20th Century came a new chapter in mankind’s history, unleashed during a time of great war and destruction. It was the beginning of the Age of the Superpowers , yet with the closing of the Second World War, this new spark seemingly flickered and died. Until now… Now the story can be told of the great lost Superpower.– men and women with incredible abilities who changed the course of mankind forever… and who had been thought lost… Until now…

I was pretty underwhelmed when I heard about this Ross / Krueger collaboration last year. I was not the biggest fan of Justice, I know that sounds like an oxymoron, not being a fan of Alex Ross’s work. Both Jim Krueger and Alex Ross are both legends in the industry and it’s not that Justice had bad quality, it didn’t, it was beautiful and had a exciting plot premise… it just went on… and on… and on. By the end, I just didn’t care whether or not Brainiac of Grodd or whomever won or how they were stopped. Needless to say Project: Superpowers was not on my “must get” list. But this week, the $1.00 well priced zero issue peaked my interest. And I am glad it did. If the rich background given here is even a sample of what is to come, this series will be less Justice and much more Kingdom Come. The basics of the preview issue is WWII heroes betrayed by one of their own, who was following a vision of a great good and now decades later is second guessing himself. Unexpected, brilliant and well-told!
