Ultimates 3 #2 (Marvel – Loeb / Madureira / Lichtner) – The Brotherhood vs. the Ultimates…Hawkeye vs. Spider-Man…the shocker of the year rocks on! It’s Captain America vs. Sabretooth, Iron Man vs. Mystique…and Thor vs. Valkyrie? Plus: Which mega-popular character (nope, not Spidey) makes a surprise appearance on the last page? The dream team of Jeph Loeb, Joe Madureira, and Christian Lichtner continues to rock the Ultimates! The Original Ultimates is still considered to be one of the best breakthrough series of all times… whether you are a Marvel fan or not, you stood in awe of that first series, amazed with the re-imagining of the Avengers and the fresh look and feel of these old friends. Reading Ultimates 3 and watching Hawkeye go nuts and Cap scream at him is very similar to watching Caesar revolt in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes after watching Charlton Heston in the original. Yes, I see where the plot has come, yes I see the connections… no, besides the fact you thought you could make more money off of this I don’t see why you made this. Jeph, Joe and Christian are all fantastic in their own right, but this ongoing action scene of a comic, with intermittent acts showing how pathetic Tony Stark is pretty much unneeded. Ultimates 3 is supposed to finish out the The March on Ultimatum story arc… after listening to conversations in the comic shop and reading online blogs, not sure if anyone cares.
