The End League #1

The End League #1 (Dark Horse – Remender / Broome / Parsons)A thematic merging of The Lord of the Rings and Watchmen, The End League follows a cast of the last remaining supermen and women as they embark on a desperate and perilous journey through a world dominated by evil, in hopes of locating the one remaining artifact that can save humanity-the Hammer of Thor. For his return to the world of comics renowned artist Mat Broome (WildC.A.T.S.) teams up with critically acclaimed writer Rick Remender (Fear Agent) for this, Dark Horse Comics’s newest superhero series. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book when I first heard about it. Seemed like a play on some already common themes… dark future, bad guys have a stranglehold on the world (through control of the food supply) and a small band of stalwart heroes are left to fight the good fight. Turns out, this story is anything but trite and stereotypical. Without a doubt, The End League was the best surprise I had this week. The story is driven by Rick Remender’s expert ability to introduce and develop characters to the point that the readers care by the end of the first issue. While I am not the biggest fan of WildC.A.T.S., Mat Broome comes through in aces with his interior art. With The End League, Dark Horse shows that they don’t rely on older characters to make hits. I look forward to issue #2.
