Action Comics #858

Action Comics #858 (DC – Johns / Frank) – I finally read a Superman comic this year and am chomping at the bit for the next issue. I know the Geoff Johns/Richard Donner run met with acclaim, but I didn’t like it at all. The All Stars Superman has been heralded as one of the best Superman stories in years, but the lateness has driven me nuts to the point that I just don’t care anymore. Alas, the comic collector in me won’t let me drop the long running Superman titles. It gives me great joy to be so pumped about the latest arc in Action Comics.

DC.com gives this sales pitch for Action #858 “Welcome superstar Gary Frank as he kicks off his run as the new monthly artist on ACTION COMICS with the extra-length first chapter of “Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes”! Spinning from “The Lightning Saga,” the original Legion of Super-Heroes returns! When he was a boy, Clark Kent was isolated and alone until he met this teen team from the 31st Century. Today, it’s been years since Superman saw his childhood friends. Why haven’t they returned to visit him? What’s become of the symbol of Superman in the future? And just why is the future so dangerous for Superman? They warned him away, but now he’s determined to help his friends — even if it means his life!

This book was nailed from the first page to the last. For those out there who are thinking about placing a Superman book in their PullBox, it just doesn’t get any better than this.
